Frequently Asked Questions
This section answers the most frequently asked questions about customs procedures, providing quick and accurate information on formalities and regulations.
EORI (Economic Operators Registration and Identification Number) is an identification number used when communicating with the customs authorities of the European Union.
Without a valid EORI number, standard customs clearance cannot be carried out. If you do not have one yet, we will be happy to assist you with the registration process.
Yes. If you are importing goods from a country outside the European Union and customs clearance is carried out on your behalf, you will need an assigned EORI number even as a private individual.
In most cases, EORI registration is completed within a few hours after submitting a complete application.
The exact timeframe depends on the current workload of the customs authorities and the accuracy of the submitted information.
When importing goods from countries outside the European Union, you may be required to pay VAT and, in some cases, customs duty.
VAT
When importing goods into Slovakia, VAT is generally charged at a standard rate of 23% on the sum of:
– the value of the goods
– transport costs
– any applicable customs duty.
Duty
The amount of customs duty depends on the type of imported goods and their customs classification (HS code). The customs duty rate can be 0%, but for some commodities it may reach several percent of the customs value of the goods.
If you order goods from the USA worth €200 and the shipping costs €30, the basis for calculating VAT will be €230.
Customs duty (e.g. 2%): 230 € × 2 % = 4,60 €
This customs debt is added to the original amount, creating a new basis for VAT calculation (€230 + €4.60 = €234.60).
VAT (23 %): 234,60 € × 23 % = 53,96 €
The total import charges (customs duty + VAT) in this case will amount to 58,56 € (4,60 € + 53,96 €).
The exact amount of customs duty and VAT depends on the type of goods, the country of origin, and the customs classification.
An incorrectly or incompletely submitted customs declaration can lead to shipment delays, additional requests from the customs office, or incorrect calculation of customs charges.
By using the services of a customs representative, you can be assured that your customs clearance will be handled correctly, quickly, and in accordance with current customs regulations.
After receiving the necessary documents, we prepare the customs declaration and submit it electronically to the relevant customs office.
After the customs procedure is approved and the relevant customs charges are paid, the shipment is released for free circulation and the carrier can continue its delivery to the recipient's address.
The entire process can usually be handled electronically without the need for a personal visit to the customs office.
An Air Waybill (AWB) is an air cargo waybill. It is an official transport document that accompanies your shipment throughout the entire air freight process. It contains detailed information about the sender, recipient, shipment contents, and weight, and also serves as proof of the conclusion of the transport contract. The number on this document also serves as the tracking number under which you can track the package.
If you do not have an invoice available, you can provide a screenshot of the order from the online store or another document proving the value of the goods. In some cases, it may also be necessary to prepare a proforma invoice. If you need assistance with its preparation, do not hesitate to contact us.
The HS code (a 6 to 10-digit number) determines the customs duty rate and import rules for your goods. You can determine it correctly by following these steps:
Determine the exact composition and purpose: You need to know what the goods are made of and what they are specifically used for (e.g. “cotton T-shirt” is not enough; it is important to know whether it is knitted or woven).
Use the customs tariff (TARIC): You can search for the code in the official European TARIC system using keywords or categories.
Ask the supplier: Foreign suppliers (e.g. from the USA or Asia) often provide the first 6 digits of the HS code directly on the invoice or in the technical documentation.
Not sure what to do? Do not risk penalties. An incorrect HS code can delay your goods at customs or increase costs. If you are unsure, use our free consultation. Tell us what type of goods you are importing, and our specialists will be happy to help you with the classification.
You only need to send us the shipment documents (invoice and proof of payment) and sign a simple power of attorney. We will handle all communication with the customs office and all paperwork on your behalf.
You typically need a commercial invoice, proof of payment (bank statement or PayPal), a transport document (AWB/CMR), and, if applicable, a power of attorney for the customs representative.
Customs will contact the trademark owner. If it is confirmed that the goods are counterfeit, the goods will be seized and destroyed at the buyer’s expense, and administrative proceedings may also follow.
